About AnimalCalculators.com
Free, science-backed tools and guides for every pet owner, farmer, and animal keeper — built by a veterinarian who lived the problem firsthand.
Why This Site Exists
Anyone who has cared for animals — whether a single beloved dog, a backyard flock of chickens, or a working livestock farm — knows the uncertainty that comes with those moments when something feels off. Is my dog eating enough? Is this weight loss normal? How much is too much of that food? And the harder question underneath all of them: do I need to call a vet right now, or can this wait?
For many people, accessing a veterinarian quickly isn't always possible. Rural farmers may be hours from the nearest clinic. Pet owners in the middle of the night face urgent questions with no one to call. Smallholders managing dozens of animals need fast, reliable numbers to make feeding and health decisions every single day.
I built AnimalCalculators.com because I saw this gap clearly — both as a veterinarian and as someone who grew up around animals. There was no single, trustworthy place where an everyday person could get a science-grounded answer fast. Most online tools were black boxes with no formulas, no sources, and no explanations. That wasn't good enough.
This platform exists so that whether you're a first-time pet parent or a seasoned farmer, you have access to the same quality of information that a veterinary clinic uses — explained in plain language, backed by real science, and completely free.
Founder & Veterinary Lead
Dr. Imad Khan, DVM, MSc
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine · Masters in Poultry Science
Dr. Imad Khan is a veterinarian with a specialisation in poultry science. His background spans the full range of species this platform serves — companion animals, horses, livestock, and poultry — bringing genuine, broad-based expertise to every tool built here. All calculators, guides, and formulas published on this site are reviewed and verified against primary scientific literature under his oversight.
What We Stand For
Verified Science
Every formula is sourced from NRC publications, WSAVA guidelines, AAFCO standards, and peer-reviewed veterinary journals. We cite every source on every page — nothing is hidden.
Full Transparency
Formulas, variables, biological assumptions, and limitations are disclosed on every calculator page. You can verify every number independently — because you deserve to understand the math behind your animal's care.
Plain Language First
Medical science doesn't need to be incomprehensible. We translate every complex concept — RER, BCS, FCR, dry matter basis — into everyday language that any pet owner or farmer can immediately understand and apply.
Always Free
Every tool is free, with no accounts or paywalls. Calculator inputs are processed entirely within your browser and are never sent to our servers. Because access to good information shouldn't depend on what you can afford.
Scientific Standards & Source Verification
Every calculator on AnimalCalculators.com lists its source publications directly on the calculator page. Our primary reference authorities include:
- NRC (National Research Council) — Nutrient Requirements of Dogs, Cats, Horses, Poultry, and other species.
- WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) — Global Nutrition Guidelines for dogs and cats.
- FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) — Agricultural production standards and livestock management guidelines.
- AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) — Pet food nutritional guidelines and standards.
- Aviagen / Cobb-Vantress — Commercial broiler breed performance standards and management guidelines.
- Peer-reviewed publications in Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Poultry Science, Journal of Animal Science, and other indexed journals.
