Nutrition & Energy Animal Calculators

Caloric requirements (MER/RER), daily feed amounts, dry matter intake (DMI), digestible energy, and ration planning.

Scientific & Clinical Context

Feeding your animals the right amount of food is one of the best ways to keep them happy, healthy, and full of energy. Whether you have an energetic puppy, an indoor cat snoozing on the couch, or a barn full of horses and cattle, every animal has unique daily calorie needs. Smaller pets like cats and little dogs actually burn through energy much faster for their body size than big animals like horses. At the same time, growing babies, nursing mothers, and hardworking animals need extra fuel to stay strong. Our nutrition calculators take the guesswork out of mealtime by calculating your pet’s baseline resting calories (the energy they burn just breathing and sleeping) and adjusting for their daily activity, age, and lifestyle so you can serve the perfect portion size every day.

Frequently Asked Questions: Nutrition & Energy

Why do smaller animals burn energy faster than bigger ones?

Smaller animals lose body heat much more quickly than big animals because they have more skin surface area relative to their weight. That is why a 10-pound cat or tiny terrier needs far more calories per pound of body weight than a 1,000-pound horse.

What is the difference between resting calories (RER) and daily calories (MER)?

Resting calories (RER) is the baseline energy your dog or cat burns just resting on the sofa. Daily calories (MER) adds the extra energy they need for walking, playing, staying warm, and digesting food.
